"Love and Marriage"
"A man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh"
It is important to guard your marriage in this area of "leaving and cleaving". This is one of those balancing times - you want to honor your parents, but your marriage comes first. There is no right or wrong - just make sure that you reach agreement with your wife on how much time you want to spend alone and how much time you want to spend with extended family.
The threat to oneness occurs when either of you becomes over dependent on parents, or the parents become over dominant in your marriage. You might need their help, but in the eyes of God you are one with your wife. That should be your priority - not your parents. Perhaps you need wise counsel in this area ... just don't give up. There is the potential for oneness in your marriage and the Lord will show you the way to lead your heart in that direction.
Is "leaving and cleaving" a problem for you in your marriage? Confess it to the Lord in prayer, to your wife, and be determined to get this right. Your marriage should be your top priority over any other relationship - parents, children (yes, children), friends, any one besides your wife. Your wife is your best friend and you should always look upon her as such.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. (Ephesians 5:25)
. . .each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. (Ephesians 5:33)
"And Elisha prayed, and said, "Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha."
(2 KINGS 6:17)
What we see with our physical eyes is not all that's happening. Spiritual forces are active around us. Unless God "opens our eyes" we're in the dark to what's really happening. Of course, it shouldn't be necessary for us to "see" into the spirit realm to believe what God has said, such as that His angels would keep charge of us always to protect us.
"to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me." (ACTS 26:18)
When God told Paul what his calling was, the first step mentioned was "to open their eyes . . . that they may receive." For us to receive all that God has provided for us, we must also have "our eyes opened."
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Open my spiritual eyes so I may see all that you have plan for me. Help me to open my eyes of all that is good and evil according to your word - show me Your righteous path so I can see and not waver off Your path for my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture For Today: Philippians 1:1-11 ... Paul's testimony as to God's purposes in his life is quite compelling. List at least three ways in which Paul's testimony can be applied to your life. What qualities in Paul do you long for in your own personality?
